It is commonly thought that LED lighting will last forever. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
On visiting the SUEZ recycle centre in Avonmouth that the staircase lights had been recently replaced. This centre is less than two years old!
I suspect like most new builds the electrical contractors purchased the cheapest lights from a local wholesaler and price was the only criteria.
As a pinnacle of environment and sustainability through the worthwhile functions of recycling, it doesn’t look good to have high maintenance costs because of failing lights!
Premature LED failure can stem from several factors: power surges, overheating, improper installation, low-quality components, or exceeding their rated lifespan. Check these areas for troubleshooting.
So how can you avoid buying LED lights with a short life?
For commercial premisses it is essential that the build quality is between 40,000 and 100,000 hours. The manufacturer should have ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The reputation of the manufacturer is also important.
Whilst big brand names can work, you will pay a premium for a product which is often manufactured by an OEM supplier. Whilst Chinese and far east do produce some very high quality electrical components, there are also large number of inferior products with a short life. Reputation is everything.
LEDlights4you have been operating for more than 20 years. As specialists in commercial LED lighting, we have many customers with lights over ten years old. This because we recognised early on that quality of components and manufacture was more important than price.
Aqualisa a major supplier of shower fittings noticed that lights we had supplied were still operational whilst others had failed withing 4 years!
Often the cost of fitting and replacement is often more than the cost of the fitting, so why choose an inferior fitting just to save a couple of quid?
